 Are Massages Good When Training For The Marathon

For runners, sports massage helps with: Relieving tightness/tension – obviously this is one of the main aims of a sports massage and often one of the reasons people get one. A sports massage will stretch and lengthen your muscles in a much deeper and possibly more specific way than when you stretch after your run.

Quite a few runners have asked me if they should get a massage the day before a race. You don’t want to layer too many sources of muscle soreness so it’s best to wait 1-2 days after a hard workout or race to get your massage. If you want to get a massage before a race, it’s best to do it 2-3 days before.

“How long should I wait to exercise after a massage or bodywork session?” A. Many therapists recommend clients avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after a bodywork session. Exercising after a session can both increase muscle soreness and compromise the value of the soft-tissue work you’ve just received.
